I finished my marathon book-reading this morning. It was 750-some pages and I read it in about 2 days. But now, I feel like I’ve lost something. The end of a series is always hard to swallow, especially when you come to know the characters so well. I was like this with Harry Potter too, though. I guess I just have an addictive personality.

But now that I’m done with the book that ruled my world for a whole weekend, I can get back to coming up with interesting things to talk about here. Today, it’s reading some old Batman stories that were recommended to me.

The style of writer Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale is unmistakable. While I’m going through The Long Halloween, I notice the almost clipped dialogue that Loeb brings, and Sale’s art is…well, let’s just say that everyone has the look of an overgrown baby that can be disturbing sometimes.

It’s not the first thing I’ve read by these two. I own Superman for All Seasons, which I really enjoyed. Of course, I think Superman is more suited for Sale’s artwork than Batman. Giving Batman and also Bruce Wayne a more child-like look doesn’t seem right. Even the enemies, like Poison Ivy, and Catwoman–and her alter ego Selina Kyle–looked too cute to be menacing. Superman, on the other hand, is that farmboy from Kansas. People expect him to look cutesie. Batman is supposed to be dark and ominous. Uh, not so much.

Next up for me is the second volume of Countdown to Final Crisis, which I was able to find at work last week. And then, maybe I can get to my monthlies and get caught up with everything else.

The Long Halloween is fantastic. Loeb and Sale make a great a team, bringing a new and exciting face to every Batman character–even the Falcone’s were interesting. I haven’t read Superman for All Seasons yet, but it’s definitely on my list.
