The Iron Man movie

I know, I know. I’m way past being up to date on this, just having seen the movie a while ago. Admittedly, I’m a DC fan. I still find it hard to describe why I enjoy DC more than Marvel. I just do.

But I enjoyed this movie immensely. I remember when the movie was first announced how people got really excited, and then how the boos and hisses began when Robert Downey, Jr. was cast as businessman Tony Stark. I’ve seen a couple Iron Man comics since I first read about those stories, and I can say that, physically, he fits Tony Stark completely. Downey, Jr. is one of those actors who can just as easily play the womanizing schmuck as he can the community-minded businessman with a good heart. Even better to watch was the transition from the former to the latter.

I knew nothing about Pepper Potts going into the movie, and I suppose that is a good thing, considering what I read about her character from the comics on Wikipedia. It’s hard not to like Gwyneth Paltrow, first of all. Pepper is far from being a static character in the movie, though. Her fascination with Tony is obvious from the beginning, but she plays it off as shyness very well. The scene at the party was great fun to watch, too, because it sets up even more changes in both of their characters. Pepper is able to go from being shy in the beginning to being the bold type of woman that Tony goes for.

And who can forget Rhody? Terrence Howard is great in this role, simply because he is the type of actor who can pull off being a high-ranking military official while still showing a fun and adventurous side. I’m looking forward to seeing more of him in the next Iron Man movie.

Does a good Iron Man movie make me want to learn more about the comic and maybe start reading it? I don’t think so. Like I said, there’s something about Marvel comics that don’t appeal to me as much as DC does. Maybe I’ll have to think about that some more and post about it.
