How many villains did you say?

Published by joanne1938 at 1:16 pm under Smallville Edit This

With July now in full swing, it seems like the new information about the 8th and most likely final season of Smallville seems to be coming almost daily. And almost daily, we hear about a new villain that is going to be haunting the Smallville/Metropolis area this season. If you don’t want to hear about the new people moving around the Kansas cornfields, stop reading now.

You’ve had your warning.

The two main characters we’ve heard about, almost since the end of season 7 when it was announced that villain favorite Lex (played by Michael Rosenbaum) wouldn’t be returning was that a female character named Tess would be taking over as Lex’s hand-picked henchman and Davis “Doomsday” Bloome. All the news thus far is that these characters will be around all season, and pose a dual threat to Clark. Personally, I like this idea. For the last couple of seasons, Smallville fans have seen so much of Lex that they might have either forgotten or not even realized that Lex is only one villain that Superman has in his rogue gallery.

Doomsday will eventually kill Superman. I’m pretty confident that it won’t happen on the show, but it’s interesting to know that in the future, Doomsday will find a way to stop the Man of Steel. I’m also pretty confident that the writers know this fact and will find ways to show him as a legitimate threat. He might still be a little green, but he’s still going to be a big time threat.

And Tess? Longtime Superman fans will remember Tess Tessmacher from the first Superman movie and make immediate comparisons. But also remember that Smallville is a reimagining of the Superman myth. Tess Tessmacher was more than a little air-headed. But if Lex hand picked her to watch over his assets in his absence, I’m sure we can rest assured that she will be more than able to take up Lex’s reputation for playing hardball.

That’s two villains so far, but that’s not all of them. Episode two is titled “Plastique” and will in fact involve Bette Sans Souci, who will eventually become the villain Plastique from the Firestorm and Captain Atom comics. She will simply be a 15-year-old street kid in this episode, but for someone who will eventually become a villain, chances are that we will see the beginnings of her life of crime.

The latest news is that the Smallville showrunners are looking to cast the Maxima character. Wow. I don’t know much about her, but I know that she wants to marry Superman. This is not a definite right now, but I love the idea that a character from another planet approaching Clark as her preferred mate. I think Clark has a couple other women in his life who would take exception to that idea.

So right now, it looks like the villain count this season is at four, at we only have information about the first four episodes at this point. Some people will see this necessary in order to fill the void of Lex Luthor, but I see it as a good change. The season is taking on more of a feel of the Superman myth from what we’ve heard so far, so I like the idea that Clark doesn’t just have one person he has to watch out for. I might be wrong, but I think the eighth season of Smallville might be the best.

I’m not so sure. The great thing about Doomsday (when we first saw him) was that we didn’t know who he was, where he came from, or how he was so incredibly strong. None of the usual villains had the prerequisites to kill the Man of Steel, so we were given a character whose only purpose in the DC Universe was to kill Superman–an “uncharacter.”

I wouldn’t mind seeing Darkseid since he plays a major role in the Superman saga, or perhaps just forgetting Oliver Queen and introducing a young Bruce Wayne (as the creators intended back in season three).
