Favorite Characters, Part One

Published by joanne1938 at 8:12 pm under characters, comics Edit This

Over the next…oh, ten days or so, I’ve decided to do a countdown of my favorite comic book characters. Note that this doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re heroes, but yet characters in general.

10. Black Canary

Dinah Lance, aka Black Canary, hasn’t always been a front line character for DC Comics. From what I know, her star has started to rise in the last 10 years, most likely a combination between the Birds of Prey comic book, the Justice League Unlimited cartoons, and her relationship with Oliver Queen (Green Arrow).

Canary is a character who is hard to dislike. I mean, how can someone dislike a character as forgiving as she is? Most people, I’m sure, have lost count of how many times Ollie has cheated on her, and yet she is still there with him. Hell, she even married the guy! And to her credit, she’s taken a sarcastic character like Ollie and turned him into a teddy bear whenever she’s around.

But let us not forget that she has some serious skills, as well. I can only imagine how debilitating the Canary Cry would be if it were an actual ability. A supersonic scream? My ears hurt just thinking about it. She’s also got an awesome motorcycle, and knows how to kick a person in just the right place. A superhero doesn’t get to be the head of the Justice League by riding someone else’s coattails, either. She’s a strong woman with strong skills and a great deal of experience.

And if none of this impresses you as a reason to put her on the list, then I give you this one fact. Any woman who chooses to fight crime wearing nothing but fishnets and a leather jacket deserves some kind of medal.

Hey, I used to be from IL, too. And I loved comic books growing up. Wonder Woman was my favorite because I was sure I could grow up to be her. I used to wait at the local grocery store until the latest issue was delivered, all the while clutching my dime so I wouldn’t lose it. When the van drove up to make the delivery, I would start jumping up and down with delight. Then, I would run home and, for the next couple of hours, I would read and re-read the new issue. After reading it over and over, I would share it with the other kids in our neighborhood. It was always returned to me like new. Comic books were well-respected all those years ago. Great times. Good luck, Comic Genius!
