Superhero Costumes

MSN recently put up an article about superhero costumes and it made me think about why movie producers find it necessary to change up the classic costume in favor of something more fashionable when a comic book is brought to the big screen.

For example, Wolverine’s outfit in the movies was brought up, and it was decided by the editors at MSN that a big mistake was made by not putting Hugh Jackman in the yellow spandex that comic book fans are used to. Admittedly, I have neither read nor seen any of the X-Men movies. The Marvel Mutants were just never my thing. But I am a huge fan of remaining true to the comic books whenever a movie is made from a comic book, and if they messed it up by putting him in jeans and a t-shirt instead of his traditional costume, then I have to agree with them.

I was surprised by their observations in reference to Superman. Considering that Superman ushered in the superhero era in the first place, his costume should be viewed more as classic than as an “average” version of the superhero costumes out there. For the latest movie version, the costume was changed up a little (the darker colors, which served the purpose of distinguishing it from the 1970s movie version) but it was very true to the classic.

I have to agree whole-heartedly with their assessment of the Batman costume that featured nipples. Please, people. Batman is supposed to be a dominating presence. The last thing his opponents should be thinking about is whether he’s cold or excited.

Good article overall, even though I didn’t exactly agree with all their opinions. Check it out for yourself and form your own opinions. And if you’re as offended by the thought of Ben Affleck as a superhero as I am, then please raise your hand and have your voice heard.
