The DC Multiverse and its Many Possibilities
With Final Crisis upon us this summer and its possible implications for the Multiverse, I thought I would throw in my two cents about its existence and how it could be utilized in the future.
After Crisis on Infinite Earth and before Infinite Crisis, there was one Earth in the DC universe. But with the re-establishment of the multiple Earths in Infinite Crisis, the number of possibilities for stories (and therefore $$) grew exponentially for DC Comics. The multiverse is that wonderful opportunity that all comic book readers love because it gives them the chance to see all kinds of “what if” stories that are a change from the same old thing that sometimes plagues established comics with lots of continuity to consider. A portion of the 52 Earths have been named, and though I haven’t read all of Countdown to Final Crisis, my understanding is that some of those worlds perished in the wake of the deadly virus that ripped through the multiverse.
Should the multiverse continue to exist after Final Crisis, I have one request for DC…give us some monthly books (or even some miniseries) that take advantage of the existence of these multiple Earths. How would the Hal Jordan of say…Earth 39 (that’s just a random number–I really have no idea if Earth 39 still exists) be different from the Hal Jordan/Green Lantern of New Earth? Is the Renee Montoya of Earth 17 a straight woman who’s married with 4 kids?
But really, I have one request that I would especially like to see that would make it possible for every person who has ever dissed Smallville and TPTB’s decisions to stray from the iconic origins of Superman. Give the Smallville universe its own Earth. Give it a chance to be as popular a comic book after the TV show ends as Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel. Give readers a chance to see the version of these characters that they’re familiar with and see where the story would take them after the TV show ends. I, for one, would much rather see a Chloe Sullivan in a Superman comic where she is the Chloe I’ve come to love over the past seven years. As nice as it would be to have her in the main Superman title, it just wouldn’t be the same if she was a shadow of what everyone has always known her to be.
Here’s to hoping that the multiverse endures and that someone at DC has the same idea.
