Thank the Lord!!
When I posted yesterday, I was a little worried that I hadn’t yet decided on what today’s blog would be about. Now, I’m glad I didn’t know because it gives me the opportunity to talk about some breaking news.
I’m a huge Smallville fan, for starters. I know that comic die-harders tend to dislike the show because of how often it strays from the iconic Superman mythology, but that’s part of the reason I enjoy it so much. Everyone has heard the iconic Superman origin over and over again. This is new, fresh, and though it falls flat sometimes, the show has managed to create a whole new mythology that has managed to survive seven seasons on two separate networks that aren’t exactly known for having long-running dramas.
It’s already been wide-publicized that Michael Rosenbaum (Lex) will not be returning next season and that Kristin Kruek (Lana) will only be returning for a handful of episodes. And then just a few days ago, Mike Ausiello of TV Guide was reporting that it was quite possible (and appearing likely) that Smallville would also lose Allison Mack (Chloe). Hearing this worried me. Almost since the beginning, Chloe has been a favorite amongst Smallville lovers. Losing her in addition to Rosenbaum and Kruek would be something like television suicide.
Apparently, Mack’s people knew this. Good for them. While Mack has been a fan favorite for years, she has been sorely underappreciated by the people who sign her paychecks. It might seem little, but she has yet to find her way onto a DVD cover after said seven seasons, even though she is the only original cast member other than the “Big Three.” Losing Mack for season 8 would be horrible. She may be a creation especially for the show, but it is testament to her popularity that DC Comics bought the rights to the character of Chloe Sullivan. I credit the writers for giving her some awesome lines over the years, but Allison Mack is the one who delivered them and put the human emotions into them. She is just as valuable to Smallville as Tom Welling.
So imagine my delight when I see this morning that Ausiello has amended his previous statement that Allison Mack wouldn’t be returning as Chloe next season. As it turns out, it appears that the strategy that her people employed worked, and she will not only be returning next year, but she will be in every episode.
THANK! THE! LORD!
My confidence in the powers that be is restored.
